Bangladesh Launches Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances During 15-Year Rule, Signs UN Convention
Aug 29, 2024, 08:00 PM
Bangladesh's interim government has initiated an investigation into enforced disappearances that occurred during the 15-year rule of former Premier Sheikh Hasina. A new commission of inquiry has been established to address these cases. On Thursday, Bangladesh signed an instrument of accession to a United Nations convention aimed at preventing enforced disappearances, with interim government chief Muhammad Yunus signing the document during a Council of Advisers meeting. The government is urged to seek UN assistance to enhance the effectiveness of the inquiry. Bangladesh indigenous people's rights activist Michael Chakma, a victim of enforced disappearance, has emerged seeking justice.
