India Warns of 'Serious Consequences' Over Canada's Allegations Against Amit Shah in Sikh Activists' Targeting
Nov 2, 2024, 10:52 AM
India has summoned a representative of the Canadian High Commission to lodge a strong protest over allegations made by Canadian officials that India's Home Minister Amit Shah ordered the targeting of Sikh activists in Canada. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the references to Amit Shah as 'absurd and baseless' and warned that such irresponsible actions could have serious consequences for bilateral ties. The protest was conveyed through a diplomatic note handed over on November 1, 2024, in relation to proceedings of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security in Ottawa on October 29, 2024. Additionally, India accused Canada of placing Indian consular officials under audio and video surveillance and intercepting their communications, which India considers a flagrant violation of diplomatic norms. India alleges that senior Canadian officials have deliberately leaked unfounded insinuations to international media, including a report in The Washington Post, as part of a conscious strategy to discredit India and influence other nations. India warns that these actions amount to harassment and intimidation and will further damage the already strained bilateral relations.
