Armenia Approves EU Accession Bill; Referendum Required for Membership
Jan 9, 2025, 08:27 AM
The Armenian government has approved a bill to initiate the country's accession process to the European Union. The draft legislation, presented by Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, underscores the deepening ties between Armenia and the EU in recent years. Mirzoyan stated that Yerevan intends to sign a new partnership program with the EU in the coming month, highlighting the EU's political support. The bill will now be sent to Parliament for discussion and approval. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that the adoption of the draft does not equate to EU membership, noting that a final decision would require a referendum. Pashinyan stated that before holding a referendum, it is necessary to develop a 'roadmap' and discuss it with the EU.
