Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger File UNSC Complaint Against Ukraine for Supporting Sahel Rebels
Aug 21, 2024, 01:45 PM
The military juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have formally accused Ukraine of supporting rebel groups, including Tuareg rebels, in the Sahel region of West Africa. In a letter addressed to the United Nations Security Council, the three countries, part of the Sahel Confederation, urged the council to take action against Ukraine, citing alleged support and glorification of terrorism by Ukrainian authorities. This follows a recent attack in July involving Al-Qaeda linked militants, in which Malian soldiers and Russian Wagner group mercenaries were killed. The accusations have led to demonstrations in Niger's capital, where protesters displayed Russian flags and banners labeling Ukraine as a terrorist country. The countries have officially filed a UNSC complaint.
