Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson Arrested by FBI on Wire Fraud and Theft Charges
Dec 6, 2024, 01:49 PM
Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested Friday morning at her Dorchester home by FBI agents on federal public corruption charges. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston announced that Anderson has been charged with five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. Authorities allege that Anderson orchestrated a kickback scheme, funneling taxpayer money into her own pocket. Previously, Anderson had faced state ethics violations for hiring her sister and son, for which she paid a fine. Investigators indicated that she was facing financial troubles when she hired a relative to her staff and launched the fraudulent scheme. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has called on Anderson to resign following the arrest. Anderson is scheduled to appear in federal court later in the day.
