Council of Europe Recognizes Julian Assange as Political Prisoner with 88 Votes
Oct 2, 2024, 10:38 AM
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has passed a resolution recognizing Julian Assange as a political prisoner. The resolution, titled 'The detention and conviction of Julian Assange and their chilling effects on human rights,' was passed with 88 votes in favor, 13 against, and 20 abstentions. PACE, which includes parliamentarians from 46 member states, debated and voted on the resolution after hearing testimony from WikiLeaks co-founder Assange. The assembly, though it cannot create binding laws, speaks on behalf of 700 million Europeans and has a significant influence on human rights issues.
