UK Launches Tyche Military Satellite for Low Earth Orbit, Five-Year Mission
Aug 17, 2024, 07:23 AM
The United Kingdom has successfully launched a new military satellite named Tyche, marking a significant step in enhancing its space capabilities. The satellite, developed by Surrey Satellite Technology, is the size of a washing machine and weighs 150 kg. It is equipped with an electro-optical sensor for daytime imaging of Earth. Tyche will operate in Low Earth Orbit for a five-year lifespan, providing imagery and intelligence to support British military forces. Additionally, it will aid in environmental disaster monitoring, mapping development, and tracking the impact of climate change. The deployment of Tyche, which occurred 01hr 18min 56s post-launch, is part of the UK Space Command's efforts to bolster its defence ambitions in space and develop capabilities in space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
