Syrian Rebels Advance to Within 2.7 km of Aleppo, Capture 46th Regiment Base; Russian Soldier Reportedly Killed
Nov 27, 2024, 04:46 PM
On November 27, 2024, Syrian rebel factions, including Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a major offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria, particularly in the western countryside of Aleppo. The operation, named "Deterrence of Aggression," targeted positions held by the Syrian Arab Army, Hezbollah, and Iranian militias. Rebels have reportedly captured several towns and villages, including Qubtan al-Jabal, Anjarah, Urem al-Kubra, and the strategic 46th Regiment military base, advancing within approximately 2.7 kilometers of Aleppo city. The offensive has led to intense clashes, with both sides suffering casualties. Syrian opposition sources claim to have captured weapons and equipment from government forces, including anti-drone guns and advanced firearms. There are unconfirmed reports of at least one Russian special forces soldier being killed and others captured during the fighting. Rebel forces have utilized weaponized drones, including turbojet-powered kamikaze drones, and reportedly shot down a Syrian Sukhoi 24 aircraft. In response, Syrian and Russian warplanes have conducted heavy airstrikes on rebel-held areas, including Darat Izza and other locations in western Aleppo. The Syrian government forces have also deployed Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and, according to reports, used Tochka tactical ballistic missiles against rebel positions. The offensive marks one of the most significant rebel advances in the region since 2020 and coincides with a recent ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, which may have affected the deployment of pro-government forces. The Syrian government is reportedly sending reinforcements to the area as intense fighting continues into the night.
