Murmansk Airport Closed Due to Drone Threat, Governor Chibis Confirms Three UAVs Shot Down
Sep 11, 2024, 09:56 AM
Murmansk Airport in Russia was temporarily closed on September 11, 2024, due to the threat of a drone attack. Russian authorities reported that three drones were shot down in the Murmansk region, which is located almost 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine. The closure affected several flights, including those from Arkhangelsk. The Olenya air base, which hosts Tu-22M3 bombers, was also targeted. The regional governor, Andrey Chibis, confirmed the attacks, and air raid sirens were activated as the drones approached. The drones were reportedly launched from Finland, with one allegedly coming from the direction of Norway. Severomorsk, a city in the Murmansk region, was also under attack. The Kola Peninsula was confirmed to be under attack by enemy UAVs. Commercial air traffic was observed in holding patterns. The attack has highlighted Ukraine's capability to strike deep into Russian territory.
