$4 Billion Lahaina Wildfire Settlement Could Be Finalized Next Week
Aug 3, 2024, 01:52 AM
Parties involved in lawsuits seeking damages for the 2023 Lahaina wildfires in Maui have reached a $4 billion global settlement, according to court filings. The settlement aims to compensate homeowners, businesses, and other plaintiffs affected by the wildfires, which were the deadliest in the U.S. in over a century, leaving more than 100 people dead and thousands displaced. Hawaii Governor Josh Green announced the historic settlement, which involves the state of Hawaii, Maui County, and utilities, including Hawaiian Electric. The agreement is expected to prevent Hawaiian Electric from filing for bankruptcy. The settlement could be finalized next week.
