Gaza Faces 15-Year, $500-600 Million Rubble Clearing Effort Amid Unexploded Ordnance Threat
Jul 15, 2024, 09:55 AM
International demining experts are preparing for an imminent disaster due to the large quantity of unexploded ordnance buried under the rubble in Gaza. The UN estimates that 10% of the ordnance dropped by the Israeli military in Gaza did not explode, leaving over 75,000 unexploded devices. Gaza is covered with approximately 40 million tons of rubble, and it will require between $500m and $600 million to clear it. The clearing process could take more than 15 years, requiring 100 trucks a day. More than 173,297 buildings were damaged, and in southern Gaza City Khan Younis, there is not one building untouched. The actual topography has changed, with hills where there were none before due to the 2,000lbs bombs dropped. The UN official noted that the damage to infrastructure is extensive and unprecedented.
