Romanian Lawmakers Double Bear Cull to 500 After 19-Year-Old's Death
Jul 15, 2024, 04:40 PM
A 19-year-old hiker was mauled to death by a brown bear in Romania's Carpathian Mountains, prompting an emergency parliamentary session. The teenager was hurled 400ft to her death after making a frantic call to the police while being chased by the bear in front of her boyfriend. Lawmakers were called back from their summer recess to address the growing issue of bear attacks. In response, Romanian lawmakers voted to more than double the annual number of legal bear kills to nearly 500 to control the bear population and prevent further attacks.
