Senator Bob Menendez to Resign August 20 Following Conviction on 16 Federal Charges
Jul 22, 2024, 09:30 PM
Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey has announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate effective August 20, following his conviction on 16 federal charges, including bribery and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt and Qatar. Menendez was found guilty of accepting bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz, and mortgage payments from three businessmen. Despite initial resistance to stepping down, Menendez faced mounting pressure from fellow senators and the Senate Ethics Committee, which has initiated an adjudicatory review that could have led to his expulsion. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will need to appoint a replacement for Menendez's seat.
