Biden Requests $1.6 Billion for SBA as Helene Devastates, $137 Million Delivered to North Carolina
Oct 6, 2024, 12:01 AM
Hurricane Helene has caused significant devastation across several states, prompting a large-scale federal response. President Joe Biden has requested Congress to expedite the authorization of $1.6 billion for the Small Business Administration to aid in recovery efforts. The Biden-Harris administration has mobilized over 6,400 federal personnel and delivered more than $137 million in individual assistance, 14.9 million meals, and 13.9 million liters of water. Vice President Kamala Harris visited North Carolina to assess the damage and reaffirmed ongoing federal support. The administration has also approved 100% federal reimbursement of local costs to help with emergency services and provide relief for Georgia and other affected areas. Despite these efforts, the administration faces criticism from Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, who labeled the response a 'massive failure.' The White House and FEMA have refuted claims that disaster relief funds were diverted to support illegal immigrants, emphasizing that dedicated funds for disaster relief cannot be used for other purposes. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell called these claims 'ridiculous' and 'demoralizing' for aid workers.
