Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Faces Prosecution Under Corruption Act; Protests Erupt, High Court to Hear Plea
Aug 19, 2024, 06:51 AM
The Karnataka Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot, has granted permission to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah under the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment scam. The decision has sparked a political uproar, with the BJP demanding Siddaramaiah's resignation, while the Congress has called the move a conspiracy to destabilize the government. Siddaramaiah, who denies any wrongdoing, has ruled out resigning and has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court challenging the Governor's decision. The High Court has postponed the hearing until August 29 and has directed that no proceedings be conducted against Siddaramaiah until then. Protests have erupted across the state, with Congress and BJP holding opposing demonstrations. The allegations against Siddaramaiah involve claims that MUDA allocated sites to his wife in exchange for land acquired from her.
