Shigeru Ishiba Re-elected as Japan's Prime Minister After Runoff, Will Lead Minority Government
Nov 11, 2024, 07:39 AM
Shigeru Ishiba has been re-elected as Japan's 103rd Prime Minister following a parliamentary vote on Monday. Despite his scandal-tarnished coalition losing its majority in a snap general election last month, Ishiba secured 221 out of 465 votes in the lower house, leading to his appointment to lead a fragile minority government. After an inconclusive initial vote, he defeated opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda in a rare runoff among lawmakers. Ishiba, who had resigned along with his cabinet ahead of the vote as per tradition, is set to announce his new cabinet lineup shortly.
