Australian Police Seek Supreme Court Ban on October 6-7 Pro-Palestine Protests in Sydney and Melbourne
Oct 2, 2024, 02:00 AM
Australian police are seeking to ban pro-Palestine protests organized by the Palestine Action Group scheduled for October 6-7 in Sydney and Melbourne. The New South Wales Police have applied to the state's Supreme Court to prohibit the rallies, citing safety concerns. The proposed protests coincide with the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, which resulted in more than 1,100 deaths. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that commemorating the atrocities would not be appropriate. Despite police efforts, activists have condemned the move to prohibit the demonstrations and intend to proceed with the rallies, asserting their right to free speech. Victoria Police are also considering their options regarding the planned protests in Melbourne.
