Kenya's Ruto Visits Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Announces 600 Police Officers Deployment
Sep 21, 2024, 10:36 PM
Kenyan President William Ruto arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Saturday, marking his first official visit to the Caribbean nation. Ruto's visit comes 100 days after flagging off the Kenyan police contingent of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) to Haiti. His visit precedes the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York next week, where he is expected to defend the MSS, whose mandate is up for renewal in October. During his visit, Ruto met with the Kenyan police troops deployed in Haiti and expressed openness to converting the MSS into a U.N. peacekeeping operation. He also called on the international community to provide more support for the mission and announced the deployment of an additional 600 police officers in the coming weeks. The mission aims to contain gangs terrorizing the region.
