British Soldier Stabbed Near Barracks in Kent, in Critical Condition; Suspect in Custody, Not Terror-Related
Jul 24, 2024, 10:11 AM
A British soldier was stabbed near Brompton Barracks in Gillingham, Kent, on July 23, 2024. The soldier, who was in uniform at the time of the attack, is currently in critical condition. The assailant, described as a masked black male, was arrested and remains in custody. Witnesses reported the attacker ran his finger across the knife and licked it in front of shocked bystanders. The motive for the attack is not believed to be terror-related, with authorities suggesting it may be linked to mental health issues. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper calling it 'shocking and appalling,' and General Sir Roly Walker of the British Army describing it as 'horrific and unprovoked.' Several knives were recovered from the scene, and the suspect's identity has not been disclosed. The Defence Secretary has also expressed shock over the incident.
