Imran Khan's Supporters Clash with Police in Islamabad Rally, Over 20 Injured
Sep 8, 2024, 12:35 PM
Thousands of supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan gathered in Islamabad on September 8, 2024, for a massive rally organized by his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The rally aimed to demand Khan's immediate release from jail, where he has been held for over a year. Despite roadblocks, suspension of metro bus services, and hotel accommodations being fully booked, crowds poured into the rally site, moving containers by hand to bypass obstacles on Margalla Avenue. The situation escalated as police clashed with protesters, using tear gas and making arrests. Authorities had earlier discovered hand grenades and explosives near the rally site, putting the city on high alert. The rally turned violent, resulting in over 20 injuries and claims of heavy fire from the army on protesters. The Islamabad administration has decided to take legal action against the rally organizers for violating guidelines. Protesting in Islamabad has been declared illegal, with violators facing up to three years in jail. PTI has claimed there is an unofficial Martial law in place.
