Moldova Detains Two Officials for Treason in Chisinau, Expels Russian Diplomat
Aug 1, 2024, 07:03 AM
Moldova has detained two officials from the parliament and the border police service in Chisinau for suspected treason and conspiring against the country on behalf of Russia. The head of the parliament's legal department, Ion Creangă, and an unnamed border police officer were arrested for allegedly passing classified information to the Russian Embassy. The Security Service conducted the searches, and the arrests were reported by Radio Svoboda. Following the arrests, Moldova's foreign ministry expelled a Russian diplomat and summoned Russia's ambassador to issue a formal protest. The decision was based on evidence indicating that the Russian diplomat was conducting activities incompatible with diplomatic status.
