Bookmaker Matthew Bowyer to Plead Guilty to Three Charges in Shohei Ohtani-Linked Betting Case
Aug 1, 2024, 07:54 PM
Matthew Bowyer, one of the nation’s largest bookmakers, has agreed to plead guilty to three federal criminal charges in a significant illegal sports wagering case. Bowyer, who lost millions at Resorts World Las Vegas, was involved in taking bets from Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani. Mizuhara had previously pled guilty in June to charges of stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani's bank account. The charges against Bowyer, a San Juan Capistrano resident, include running an illegal sports-betting business, money laundering, and tax evasion. This case has sent shockwaves through the professional sports world over the last several months.
