South Korea Indicts Top Military Officials for Insurrection Over December 3 Martial Law
Jan 3, 2025, 04:11 AM
South Korean prosecutors have indicted two high-ranking military officials, Army Chief of Staff General Park An-su and Special Warfare Commander Lieutenant General Kwak Jong-keun, on charges of insurrection and abuse of power. The charges stem from their roles in the imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024, under the orders of then-President Yoon Suk-yeol. General Park, appointed as Martial Law Commander, issued the decree that restricted political activities, while Lieutenant General Kwak deployed special forces, including the 707 Special Mission Group, to the National Assembly to block lawmakers from rejecting the martial law declaration. The martial law was repealed within hours amid public protests, and President Yoon was later impeached. Both military officials, detained since mid-December 2024, will face trial in a military court.
