Southern 'Segregation Academies' Receive $10 Million in Taxpayer Dollars
Nov 22, 2024, 11:07 AM
Private schools across the South, originally established for white children during desegregation, have received tens of millions in taxpayer dollars through expanding voucher-style programs, according to a ProPublica analysis. In Mississippi, ProPublica identified 20 such schools that have received nearly $10 million over the past six years from the state's tax credit donation program. At 15 of these schools, student bodies were at least 85% white as of the last survey. These schools, often referred to as 'segregation academies,' continue to benefit from public dollars, echoing practices from the 1960s.
