ICC Calls for Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas Leaders Amid Gaza Conflict
Sep 11, 2024, 11:09 AM
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan has called for expedited arrest warrants for Israeli leaders Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, as well as Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif. This move comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in Gaza. The United Nations has reiterated its call for an end to the conflict, with High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk emphasizing the urgency of averting a full-blown regional conflict. Meanwhile, Netanyahu has reportedly asked Israel's Attorney General to open an internal investigation to block the ICC warrants through the principle of complementarity, but the Attorney General has refused to open what has been described as an unjustified investigation. Additionally, the ICC prosecutor seeks to confirm the death of Hamas leader Mohammed Deif. ICC findings have faced criticism but remain significant.
