US Congress Proposes Alternative to AUKUS Submarine Deal Amid Cost Concerns
Oct 18, 2024, 03:39 AM
The US Congress has proposed an alternative plan to the AUKUS submarine deal, suggesting that the US would not sell nuclear-powered submarines to Australia. Instead, up to eight new Virginia-class submarines would be built and retained for US Navy service, operating out of Australia. This proposal comes amid concerns about risk of cost blowouts for Australia and skepticism from figures like former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who previously doubted the feasibility of obtaining nuclear submarines from the US. The Congressional report also recommends that Australia abandon plans to build SSNs and redirect funds to missile and air capabilities.
