Russian Court Sentences Journalist Alsu Kurmasheva to 6.5 Years for Spreading False Information
Jul 22, 2024, 01:51 PM
A Russian court has sentenced Alsu Kurmasheva, a dual Russian-U.S. citizen and journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), to six-and-a-half years in prison. Kurmasheva was convicted of spreading false information about the Russian military. The trial, which was conducted in secret, concluded last Friday. Kurmasheva, who lived in Prague, was detained on October 18 while trying to return to the Czech Republic after a visit to Russia on personal business. The court in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan handed down the sentence, citing her dissemination of 'fake' news about the Russian army's actions in Ukraine.
