Alexander Granovsky of Petah Tikva Arrested for Espionage for Iran, Indictment Expected
Dec 31, 2024, 11:00 AM
Israeli authorities have arrested Alexander Granovsky, a 29-year-old resident of Petah Tikva, on charges of espionage for Iran. According to the Shin Bet and Israel Police, Granovsky carried out various missions under Iranian directives, including setting fire to eight vehicles, photographing sensitive infrastructure, and filming the neighborhood of former Defense Minister Benny Gantz. He reportedly communicated with Iranian handlers via Telegram and received financial compensation for some tasks. Granovsky also spray-painted anti-government graffiti, including 'Children of Ruhollah,' and attempted to gather information about Israeli officials. He refused certain instructions, such as burning an ambulance and a police vehicle, but discussed obtaining a rifle and grenades. Authorities claim Granovsky was aware that his actions could harm Israel's security. This arrest is part of a broader pattern of Iranian efforts to recruit Israeli citizens for espionage, with 13 Iranian-linked espionage cases uncovered by Israeli security agencies in 2024. A formal indictment against Granovsky is expected in the coming days at the Central District Court.
