Japan Announces Eradication of Non-native Mongooses from Amami Oshima on Tuesday
Sep 3, 2024, 04:41 AM
The Environment Ministry of Japan has announced the successful eradication of the non-native small Indian mongoose from Amami Oshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture. This significant achievement, declared on Tuesday, comes after 24 years of dedicated efforts to exterminate the species, which posed a serious threat to the island’s rare Amami rabbit and other native wildlife. Amami Oshima, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, can now celebrate being mongoose-free, marking a major milestone in Japan's conservation efforts.
