Chinese Scientists Cure 25-Year-Old Woman of Type 1 Diabetes Using Stem Cells
Sep 27, 2024, 10:55 AM
Chinese scientists have achieved a groundbreaking clinical cure for a type 1 diabetes patient by transplanting islet cells derived from chemically induced pluripotent stem cells (CiPSC-islets). This procedure, published in the journal Cell, marks the first time a patient has been treated using reprogrammed stem cells extracted from their own body. A 25-year-old woman, who underwent the procedure in June 2023, started producing her own insulin less than three months after doctors injected about 1.5 million stem cell clusters into her abdominal muscles in a 30-minute procedure. She has maintained this insulin production for over a year without the need for supplements.
