Louise Haigh Resigns as UK Transport Secretary Over 2014 Fraud Conviction for Misleading Police
Nov 29, 2024, 06:37 AM
Louise Haigh has resigned as UK's Transport Secretary after admitting to a previous conviction for fraud by misrepresentation related to misleading the police about a stolen mobile phone in 2013. Haigh, who was investigated by her former employer Aviva and the police, incorrectly reported her work mobile phone as stolen during a mugging but later discovered it was still at her home and failed to inform her employer or the police promptly. She pleaded guilty to the offence in 2014, six months before becoming an MP. Haigh had disclosed the conviction to Prime Minister Keir Starmer upon joining the shadow cabinet. Her resignation has prompted questions over Starmer's judgment in appointing her, making Haigh the first ministerial casualty of the Labour government.
