Google and Samsung Launch Android XR with AI Integration for Extended Reality
Dec 12, 2024, 09:18 PM
Google has launched Android XR, a new operating system designed for extended reality (XR) headsets and glasses, in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. This platform aims to redefine computing by integrating AI, AR, and VR to create immersive experiences. Android XR will first launch on Samsung's upcoming headset, Project Moohan, available for purchase next year. The system supports a variety of applications, including real-time audio and video streaming, interactive assistants, live translation, and real-time tutorials. It also features advanced AI tools like Gemini, which can understand user intent, plan, research, and guide through tasks. Users can watch YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen, explore Google Maps in Immersive View, and use Google Photos in 3D. Android XR will support glasses for all-day use, providing helpful information through Gemini, including multilingual conversations. Developers can utilize familiar Android tools and frameworks like ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR to build for this platform. Google is also inviting developers, device makers, and creators to shape this next evolution of computing, with real-world testing of prototype glasses set to begin soon.
