VisitChina Battles HMPV Outbreak in Zhejiang, Urges Precautions as No Vaccine Available
Jan 3, 2025, 04:48 AM
China is grappling with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), an RNA virus causing flu-like symptoms, five years after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus, which spreads through droplets and close contact, is primarily affecting children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Reports indicate that the outbreak has led to overwhelmed hospitals in several parts of the country, including Zhejiang. Chinese health authorities have issued a public health safety alert and are urging citizens to wear face masks and wash their hands frequently to curb the spread. There is currently no vaccine available for HMPV. The outbreak is part of a broader surge in respiratory illnesses, including influenza A, pneumonia, and Covid-19, which are reportedly spreading rapidly across China. HMPV symptoms include cough, fever, and cold-like symptoms.
