Microsoft Signs Deal to Restart Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant for 835MW AI Power by 2028
Sep 20, 2024, 02:41 PM
Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, which was the site of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history. The deal, set to be implemented by 2028, will see Constellation investing $1.6 billion to revive the plant's undamaged Unit 1 reactor, which was decommissioned in 2019 due to high operational costs. The plant will provide 835 megawatts of carbon-free power exclusively to Microsoft's data centers, supporting the tech giant's growing artificial intelligence power needs. Microsoft will commit $800 million annually over the 20-year period, totaling $16 billion. This marks the first time a U.S. nuclear plant will come back into service after being decommissioned, and all its output will be dedicated to a single customer.
