French Destroyer Rescues 29 Mariners from MT Sounion in Suspected Houthi Attack
Aug 22, 2024, 09:22 AM
The French destroyer FS Chevalier Paul (D-621) successfully rescued 29 mariners from the Greek-owned oil tanker MT Sounion in the Red Sea. The tanker, which had not requested EUNAVFOR ASPIDES protection, came under repeated attack on August 21, losing its engine power. The attacks are suspected to be an Iran-backed Houthi act of terrorism. Most of the rescued crew members are Filipinos. The European Union's Red Sea naval mission responded to the incident after a request from the tanker’s master.
