Houston Astros Release First Baseman José Abreu, DFA'd, Owed $30 Million
Jun 14, 2024, 06:05 PM
The Houston Astros have released first baseman José Abreu from their Major League roster. Abreu, who signed a three-year, $58.5 million contract last offseason, is still owed more than $30 million. His performance this season has been underwhelming, with a slash line of .124/.167/.195 in 35 games. Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced the release, indicating that a corresponding move will be announced later today. Abreu's release comes as a significant financial decision for the Astros, who will absorb the remaining salary obligations. Additionally, Abreu was DFA'd and has another year at $19.5mm after this one.
