Dec 11, 2024, 09:13 PM
David Bonderman, affectionately known as "Bondo," the billionaire co-founder of private equity giant TPG and founding owner of the NHL's Seattle Kraken, has died at the age of 82. Bonderman was instrumental in bringing the NHL's 32nd franchise to Seattle and was also a minority owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics. The Celtics released a statement calling him "an accomplished businessman and philanthropist, and a beloved member of the Celtics family who will be dearly missed." Senator Maria Cantwell remarked that Bonderman "was a great environmentalist and supporter of many northwest causes" and was "instrumental in getting us the Seattle Kraken and supporting the University of Washington." Dan Bylsma, the Kraken's coach, recalled Bonderman's passion for the team, saying he "would not stop talking about the team, an embodiment of passion and energy." Bonderman co-founded TPG, a global alternative asset management firm with $239 billion under management. His contributions extended beyond business; he was a supporter of environmental causes and the Seattle community. The Seattle sports community and industry leaders have expressed their condolences, acknowledging his significant impact.
