Apple Faces EU Warning to Open iPhone OS Under Digital Markets Act, Risks 10% Fines
Sep 19, 2024, 09:46 AM
Apple Inc. is set to receive a warning from the European Union to open up its iPhone operating system to rival technologies or risk significant fines. This directive is part of the EU's new Digital Markets Act, which aims to ensure interoperability and fair competition within the digital market. If Apple fails to comply, it could face fines of up to 10% of its global annual turnover. The EU antitrust regulators have initiated proceedings to specify Apple's obligations under these new rules, emphasizing the need for Apple to provide free and effective interoperability with hardware and software features controlled by its designated operating systems, iOS and iPadOS. Apple has been given six months to comply.
