Apple Raises Privacy Concerns Over Meta's 15 Interoperability Requests Under EU's DMA, Citing User Data Access
Dec 18, 2024, 11:59 PM
Apple Inc. has raised concerns over 15 interoperability requests made by Meta Platforms Inc. under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), asserting that these requests could compromise user privacy and security. Apple stated that Meta's requests, which are more numerous than those from any other company, seek potentially far-reaching access to Apple's technology stack. The requests appear to be unrelated to the use of Meta's external devices like smart glasses and VR headsets, and if granted, could allow Meta to access sensitive user data such as messages, emails, phone calls, app usage, photos, files, calendar events, and passwords. Apple's critique comes amid pressure from the European Commission to enhance iOS interoperability with rival platforms, with a deadline set for January 9, 2025, for feedback on proposed measures. Apple could face fines under the DMA if it does not comply with lawful interoperability requests, as outlined in its white paper.
