Canadian Media Giants Sue OpenAI for Copyright Infringement, Seek Billions in Damages
Nov 29, 2024, 07:55 PM
On Friday, a coalition of major Canadian news organizations filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, accusing the company of illegally using their copyrighted articles to train its AI models. The lawsuit, the first of its kind in Canada, alleges that OpenAI regularly breached copyright laws and online terms of use by scraping content without permission. The media companies involved include Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada. They are seeking billions in damages, claiming that OpenAI could be liable for up to $322 billion, along with a permanent injunction against the unauthorized use of their content.
