EU Finds Elon Musk's X in Breach of Digital Services Act Over Blue Checks, Faces 6% Fine
Jul 12, 2024, 10:45 AM
The European Union has issued preliminary findings that Elon Musk's social media platform X is in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The EU Commission has accused X of deceptive practices related to its blue check verification system, which now allows users to pay for verification without actual verification, misleading users. Additionally, X has failed to meet advertising transparency requirements, has not provided data access to researchers, and has used dark patterns. These violations could result in a fine of up to 6% of X's global revenue if confirmed. EU Chief Thierry Breton stated that X has the right to defend itself, but significant changes will be required if the findings are upheld.
