Southern Methodist University (SMU) secured the No. 11 seed in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, edging out the University of Alabama for the final spot. Despite a loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship game, SMU was selected over Alabama, which became the first team left out of the playoff. SMU will face No. 6 seed Penn State in the first round.
