VisitNorway to Mandate Bomb Shelters in New Buildings Starting 2026 Amid Russian Threat
Jan 10, 2025, 01:45 PM
Norway is set to resume the construction of civilian bomb shelters, a decision influenced by Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. The country has not built new bomb shelters since 1998, but plans to mandate their inclusion in all new buildings starting in 2026. These shelters will vary from high-tech bunkers equipped with air purification systems to simpler structures in garages or subway tunnels. The requirement will apply to buildings over 1,196 square yards, with an estimated cost of approximately €2,500 per person. This move is part of Norway's broader effort to enhance its civil defense preparedness, aiming to increase shelter coverage from the current 45% to better match the levels seen in neighboring countries like Finland, which has 90% coverage.
