Jessica Tisch Named Second Female NYPD Commissioner, Effective November 25

Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Jessica Tisch, the current Commissioner of the Department of Sanitation, as the new Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Tisch, who previously held administrative and counterterrorism roles within the NYPD but has no sworn policing experience, will begin her new position on Monday, November 25, 2024. She has led a modernization charge at Sanitation and becomes the second female NYPD Commissioner in the department's 179-year history. This appointment marks the fourth time Adams has appointed an NYPD Commissioner during his term.
