Japan Surpasses 33.38 Million Foreign Visitors in 2024, Expects Over 35 Million by Year-End
Dec 18, 2024, 07:38 AM
Japan has set a new record for annual foreign visitor numbers, reaching 33.38 million visitors from January to November 2024, surpassing the previous record of 31.88 million set in 2019. The Japan National Tourism Organization reported that November alone saw 3.19 million foreign visitors, and the total number of visitors is expected to exceed 35 million by the end of the year. The increase in visitors is attributed to a weaker yen and the allure of Japan's rich culture and natural attractions. South Korea and China were the largest sources of visitors, with South Korea contributing the highest number. The government aims to increase the number of foreign visitors to 60 million by 2030, despite challenges such as overtourism in major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, where accommodation costs have risen significantly.
