Burmese Python Swallows 77-Pound Deer on Video, Jaws Open to 26 cm
Oct 25, 2024, 12:56 PM
A new study conducted by biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida has revealed that Burmese pythons are capable of consuming larger prey than previously thought. Researchers were stunned when they observed a Burmese python swallowing a 77-pound white-tailed deer in a Florida swamp, capturing the event on video. The study measured the jaws of three large adult female pythons, including one that was ingesting the deer. This finding highlights the significant impact these invasive predators can have on local ecosystems, particularly in the Greater Everglades area. The study also noted that the python's jaws can open up to 26 cm, exceeding the previously assumed maximum of 22 cm. Scientists described the sight as the most astonishing in 12 years of observation.
