Colorado Secretary of State's Office Mistakenly Posts Over 600 Partial Voting System Passwords
Oct 30, 2024, 12:21 AM
The Colorado Secretary of State's Office mistakenly posted a spreadsheet on its public-facing website that included partial BIOS passwords to voting systems. The spreadsheet contained hidden tabs that could be accessed by unhiding them, revealing the passwords. The office says the passwords can only be used with physical, in-person access to the voting systems and that the exposure does not pose a security risk. The incident involved over 600 passwords for machines in 63 of the state's 64 counties. The department announced the mistake on Tuesday and has since removed the passwords from the website. Secretary of State Jena Griswold's office stated that the election remains secure despite the inadvertent disclosure.
