Kenyan Activist Boniface Mwangi Arrested During Protest, Released on Bail Amid Incitement Charges
Jul 26, 2024, 09:56 AM
Activist Boniface Mwangi was arrested during a protest at Kenyatta Market and is being held at Central Police Station. Alongside Mwangi, other activists including Hussein Khalid and Shadrack Khalif were also apprehended. The arrests occurred during a march in Nairobi CBD to honor fallen comrades. Police are seeking to detain Mwangi and four others for 21 days to complete investigations, citing charges of incitement to violence, false publication under the Computer Misuse & Cybercrime Act, unlawful assembly, and breach of peace. Mwangi's lawyer, James Wanjeri, confirmed the arrest. The DCI claims they do not know where the activists live. However, a court has freed Mwangi and the four others on cash bail of Ksh. 20,000 each, rejecting the police's application for extended detention.
