Australia Accuses China-Backed APT40 Hackers of Cyber Espionage
Jul 9, 2024, 05:36 AM
Australia has accused a cyber group acting on behalf of China's Minister of State Security of espionage and hacks targeting both government and private sector networks. The Australian Signals Directorate has identified the APT40 hacking group as responsible for these cybercrimes. The large-scale operation involves stealing hundreds of usernames and passwords. Australia is supported by key regional partners, including the US, the UK, and Japan, in condemning these actions. The cybercrimes include breaches of two unnamed Australian networks in 2022. The Australian government has issued a warning about the rising threat of state-backed Chinese hackers actively looking for targets to compromise.
