Argentina's Inflation Falls to 117.8% in 2024; December Rate at 2.7%, Central Bank Cuts Devaluation Pace
Jan 14, 2025, 07:09 PM
Argentina's inflation rate fell significantly in 2024, with annual inflation dropping to 117.8% from 211.4% in 2023, a reduction of 94 percentage points, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC). The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 2.7% in December 2024, slightly higher than the 2.4% recorded in November, marking the lowest December inflation since 2018. Core inflation rose to 3.2% in December from 2.7% in November, driven by an increase in beef prices. The Central Bank of Argentina announced a new exchange rate policy, slowing the monthly devaluation rate of the peso from 2% to 1%, reflecting confidence in the country's disinflation process. President Javier Milei's economic policies, implemented since he assumed office a year ago, have been credited with the substantial reduction in inflation, fulfilling a key campaign promise. However, the acceleration in core and food inflation indicates ongoing challenges in stabilizing prices. The central bank is also considering adjustments to interest rates in response to the inflation data.
